The Counseling Program
Counseling is included in every student's curricula at the elementary level. The counseling team is comprised of the following: the school counselor, administrators, student service personnel, teachers, graduate students from university counseling programs and students with their families.
Affective education is intended to help your son or daughter to be a self-sufficient, responsible and nurturing young person. This is accomplished through a number of school-wide programs, including classroom guidance activities, individual and small group counseling.
Students and parents meet with a counselor for a variety of reasons. Parents contact the counselor to learn more about parenting skills, to improve family relationships, to obtain information about outside agencies, or to gain support and understanding. Children seek help from the counselor to improve peer-relationships, to express feelings, to feel good about school, to solve problems, to change inappropriate behavior, to deal with difficult life events, and to discuss academics.
Parents may contact Ms. Flores at (305) 238-7382 EX# 127 or leave a message. The best times to reach Ms. Flores are M - F 8:35 -9:00 AM and 2:00 - 3:20 PM. Students may request help from the counselor by placing a note in Ms. Flores' mailbox. An administrator, teacher, or parent may also refer students to the counselor.
It is important for families to support the school-counseling program. The program is preventative in nature and intended to provide skills that will enable your child to grow up in an emotionally wholesome manner. Remember that you don't need to have a problem to visit a counselor.
